Motorcycle Safety Information

Riding motorcycles is an extremely popular activity in the United States. According to a Consumer Reports article, the popularity of motorcycles is expected to continue to increase in urban areas.

Most motorcyclists report using their motorcycle mostly for recreational reasons; however, others use their motorcycles for commuting.

In more urban areas, traffic is often very congested, making motorcycles a much more economical choice for many drives. Motorcycles are easy to stop nearly anywhere and are much easier to park than other types of automobiles. They are also able to navigate through traffic easier than larger automobiles.

However, due to this increase in motorcycle riding, there has also been an increase in motorcycle related accidents. In 2007 there were 1,359 motorcycle-related accidents in New York City alone. These accidents are particularly dangerous because motorcycles do not offer the safety and protection of other vehicles. Therefore, injuries occurred in nearly all motorcycle accidents.

New York Motorcycle Laws

There are laws in New York to help ensure the safety of both motorcycle riders and others on or near the road.

There are currently two types of motorcycle-related licenses available in New York: a class M license, available to those age 18 or older, and a class MJ (junior), available to those under the age of 18.

There are a few ways to obtain a class M or class MJ license, depending on if the person has any other kind of New York driver’s license already. Those who do not have any other driver’s license may be required to fill out additional forms. However, regardless of any other driver’s license, an individual must take a written motorcycle safety test to receive a class M or MJ license.

This permit, like a driver’s permit, allows a person to drive only under certain, safe conditions. After approximately 30 hours of logged practice time, the person may schedule a road test. During the road test, the person must present more than adequate riding and safety skills. He or she must also provide a registered and inspected motorcycle.

This process is to ensure that all motorcycle riders have the proper training, skills, and knowledge to drive safely. Despite this, motorcycle accidents still occur. Drivers may become complacent with basic safety skills after receiving his or her license.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

There are several ways that motorcycle riders can improve his or her safety, as well as the safety of others:

  • Wearing a protective helmet and other gear – While it is illegal to operate or ride a motorcycle without a helmet in the state of New York, many still neglect this basic rule of safety. Riders who do not wear helmets are many times more likely to be injured or killed in a motorcycle accident.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks – Like all vehicles, motorcycles need to be properly maintained in order to be safe. Becoming educated about the mechanics of the vehicle, or taking it in for regular service checks can be very beneficial. If a part were to malfunction while riding, it could be disastrous.
  • Keep a safe following distance behind traffic – Be aware that you may need to stop suddenly. Failing to do so may result in serious injury or death.
  • Be seen – This is especially important when driving at night. It is crucial that other drivers are aware of your presence on the road. Wearing the proper gear, avoiding other motorists’ blind spots and using the lights of the motorcycle can help reduce accidents.
  • Obey the laws – Like all vehicles, motorcycles are subject to traffic laws. Obeying the speed limit, being aware of right-of-way, and other basic road safety laws can make the roads a safer place for everyone.
  • Practice – Whether you are just learning how to ride or you are a long-time rider, practice can always lead to improvements. Never become complacent while operating any kind of motor vehicle.
