New York Hit and Run Accidents

Any car accident can cause severe stress and injury to a victim. Victims suffer painful injuries, costly medical treatment, and possibly lasting injuries that can affect their ability to work in the present and future. When the accident is a hit and run accident, it only amplifies the tragedy.

Many people wonder why an individual would flee the scene after being involved in a car accident. Individuals often flee because they are scared, drunk, or are trying to protect their reputation. However, none of these are an acceptable or legal excuse. Hit and run accidents are illegal!

About Hit and Run Accidents

Hit and run accidents are more common than you may think.  Also known as "hit and skips," hit and run accidents occur when the individual who caused the accident leaves the scene before speaking with the other party or before the police arrive.  The United States Department of Transportation's Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that roughly 18 percent of pedestrians killed by motor vehicles are killed by hit and run motorists.  Also, 11 percent of all vehicle accidents are hit and run accidents.

Luckily, a proper investigation can usually find the motorist who caused the accident.  If the injured person may prevail in a hit and run lawsuit if they can prove that the motorist was handling his or her vehicle in a negligent way, and that he or she left the scene of the accident without providing insurance and license information.  The injured person may be entitled to damages that often consist of medical treatment, lost wages, and compensation for pain and suffering.

In addition to paying damages to the injured party, the defendant in a hit and run case may also be charged with a misdemeanor or felony crime and have to pay added fines, have their license suspended or revoked, lose their licenses and/or insurance coverage completely, or even serve jail time.
